The students just finished learning about the resources of the Southeast Region of the United States. One resource the students learned about was coal. Coal can be found in the mountains of West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia. Coal used to be found in southeast Kansas and Frontenac. The mining done in our area was called strip mining.
To demonstrate what strip mining was like and the reclamation process of mining, each student has the opportunity to mine coal (chocolate chips) out of a piece of land (cookie). The students had to make sure that the land (cookie) was returned back to its natural state. What a fun way to learn about the resources of the Southeast Region and how it connects with our area!
