For this mystery Skype, we stayed in the state of Kansas. We visited with Mrs. Turcotte's class in Inman, Kansas. Skype was not cooperating with us today, so we had to type our answers to each other. Nevertheless, we had a great time learning about Inman!

This Mystery Skype was a special one for Mr. Vesco. The students connected with 4th grade students at Desert View Elementary in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Mr. Vesco grew up in Rock Springs and his family still lives there! The students thought it was interesting that the students from Rock Springs get to have outside recess unless its below zero! Our students also learned that the State Fish of Wyoming is the Cutthroat Trout. Thanks for connecting with us! Our Mystery Skype today was a new experience for us. We connected with Ms. Nikki Jones in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She was presenting to other educators in Virginia about how Mystery Skypes work and just how awesome they are. Our students did a great job helping Ms. Jones show the teachers how Mystery Skypes are fun and educational. Thanks for letting us be a part of the conference! Our 21st Mystery Skype of the school year took us to Norman, Oklahoma, home of the University of Oklahoma. Even though the class had trouble hearing us, that didn't stop us from learning and connecting with our first state in the Southwest Region! Our 20th Mystery Skype of the year took us north of the border once more. We connected with Mrs. Spicer's Class at the Robert Moore School in Fort Francis, Ontario, Canada. This town is right on the United States and Canadian border. The students loved comparing the weather of each place. The students from Mrs. Spicer's class thought it was interesting that our students aren't allowed to go outside for recess when the temperature drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The Canadian students go outside even if the temperature is below zero! Mrs. Spicer's class was also surprised to learn that we do not play hockey here is Frontenac or even have an ice skating rink. This was one of our best Mystery Skype's yet! Our Mystery Skype today took us to London! Not London, England though! London, Ohio! Mrs. Murphy's third grade class was amazing. They did a great job sharing Ohio facts with us. After the Skype session, we researched more about London, Ohio and found that the high school mascot is the Red Raider. Pretty cool! In Target Reading, each student read a biography. The students then created a poster with facts and information about the person. Finally, the students created a green screen movie on Veescope to share what they learned! Click the link below to see what each child created!
Conner Jenna Tucker Brylie Logan Evan Catheryn Callie Alex Alexis Dakota Today we connected with Mrs. Fitzgerald's Fourth Grade Class in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Our Principal, Mr. Allai, got to experience this Mystery Skype. It was really cool to connect with another class from the central time zone. My students were surprised to hear that Sioux Falls has over 20 elementary schools! Wow! The students just finished learning about the resources of the Southeast Region of the United States. One resource the students learned about was coal. Coal can be found in the mountains of West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia. Coal used to be found in southeast Kansas and Frontenac. The mining done in our area was called strip mining. To demonstrate what strip mining was like and the reclamation process of mining, each student has the opportunity to mine coal (chocolate chips) out of a piece of land (cookie). The students had to make sure that the land (cookie) was returned back to its natural state. What a fun way to learn about the resources of the Southeast Region and how it connects with our area! This Mystery Skype was a little different. I had the opportunity to speak with high school students from all over the State of Kansas at the Future Educators Conference at Pittsburg State University. The high school students learned about Mystery Skypes and how beneficial they are. We then did a Skype with Mrs. Corey's class in New Castle, Delaware. The students at the conference really enjoyed it! Our 16th Mystery Skype took us to the New England region. We visited Mystic, Connecticut. Another great time on Halloween! Our Mystery Skype journey continued today! We connected with Ms. Jones Fourth Grade Class in Glenburn, Maine. We learned that they are the blueberry capital of the world. We also learned that Maine is famous for the lobsters that are caught in their shores. Really cool! Our Mystery Skype on Friday took us to Union, Kentucky. This was a perfect time to Skype with this class because we are beginning to learn about the Southeast Region. Before we started the Skype, many students had to turn their shirts backwards so that we didn't give away our location. : ) We learned that Union is really close to Cincinnati, Ohio. In Target Reading, we just finished a unit about poetry. Students learned about stanzas, verses, and rhyme pattern. We also created a fun art/poetry project called Found Poetry. Students took a page from a discarded book in the library. They then looked for words on the page to create their own poem. Check out the creations below! Mystery Skype #13 took us to Hay Springs, Nebraska. What a fascinating community! We learned they are one of the smallest schools in Nebraska. We also learned that they only have 7 students in 5th grade. What a great group to connect with! Recently we connected with students down in Lakeland, Florida. This one was challenging because we had to find the city they were located in. We learned that they were in the middle of a cold spell in Florida. It was 85 degrees!! The weather sure is different here in Kansas! Recently we connected with a classroom in Grosse Point, Michigan. This town is a suburb of Detroit. We learned that hockey is a popular sport among the students! Very Cool! We have completed one-fifth of our journey across the United States! Today we connected with Mrs. Cave's class in Hilliard, Ohio. Our students learned so much from them. Did you know the State Tree of Ohio is the Buckeye? Our 9th Mystery Skype of the school year took us to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We were able to connect with Mrs. McLean's class. Mrs. Allai, our guest teacher for the day, and Mrs. Brauer, our student teacher, took the lead in this one because I was away at technology conference. The students had a great time! We have been learning about the Northeast region of the United States in class. Today, we sampled some food that are synonymous with the region. We sampled pancakes topped with real maple syrup from Vermont, juicy grapes from vineyards in New York and Pennsylvania, and dried cranberries from bogs in Massachusetts. Students also made their own butter to add to the pancakes. What a delicious day! Today we Skyped with Mrs. Wonders' Fifth Grade Class in Hartford, Iowa, which is just right outside Des Moines. It was exciting to connect with another class from the Midwest! It's Festa Italiana this Saturday! Today we spent the afternoon learning more about Italy. Mrs. Restivo taught the students about Italy and Frontenac's Italian heritage. In Mrs. Siebuhr's classroom, the students got to sample some delicious pasta with marinara or alfredo sauce. In Mr. Vesco's classroom students, students learned about the artist Michaelangelo. Students learned about how he painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling. The students were then challenged to create a piece of art just like Michaelangelo did. It was a great way to kickoff the weekend!! Our 7th Mystery Skype of the year was with Ms. Parker's class at the Lee-Scott Academy in Auburn, Alabama. We were very impressed with all of the great questions these 3rd grade students asked. One interesting coincidence is the the Kansas State University Wildcats and the Auburn University Tigers play a big football game tonight! E.M.A.W. vs War Eagle! Our 6th Mystery Skype of the year was our first outside of the U.S.A. borders. We connected with Ms. Superstein's class in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This was quite a challenge for the students. The students learned that in Montreal citizens speak both English and French. |
