Today in class we had a fun and messy way to learn about finding averages. We participated in the Oreo Cookie Challenge. Each student was challenged to stack as many Oreo cookies as they could. The students collected the data using Google Drive. From there, we did a short lesson on how to find the mean or average of a set of data. The average height for our cookie stack was 18 cookies. We will continue to use the data to learn about mode, median, maximum, minimium, and range. After completing the lesson, the students made some sculptures using the Oreos. Students from all over the USA will be participating in the same project. Data from classes from all over the country will be collected and shared. All in all, it was a fun lesson.
